Begin with the conditions
Sun, shade, soil and exposure create the starting point. Plants chosen for those conditions have a better chance of settling in well. A list of fashionable drought-tolerant plants is less useful than a palette chosen for the garden in front of you.
Make texture do some of the work
Fine grasses, broad leaves and small silver foliage can create contrast even when few plants are flowering. Repetition makes the mix feel deliberate. Leave enough room for each plant to reach its intended shape.
Keep the ground covered thoughtfully
Plant spacing, mulch and permeable surfaces all deserve a place in the plan. Bare gaps are not the only route to a lower-demand garden. The right combination can make the planting feel generous without crowding it.
Allow for the first growing season
Climate-suited does not mean no care. New roots need time and suitable watering to establish. Plan for that early attention, then adjust the routine as the garden develops.
