North Park, San Diego / Garden design study

The courtyard, reimagined.

A patchy strip of lawn becomes a place to sit, wander and enjoy from the house.

Garden design + planting

The planting

The starting point

A space with
possibility.

The brief began with a familiar problem: a sunny backyard with lovely bones, but very little reason to spend time in it. The pergola and olive tree were worth keeping. The planting and the route through the space needed a fresh start.

The design direction

A gently curving path gives the garden a clear route without making it feel divided. Low, loose planting softens the stepping stones, while a simple bench creates a second place to pause beyond the dining terrace. Repeated greens and violet flowers keep the small space calm.

The idea is simple: a garden that looks inviting from inside and feels good when you finally close the laptop and step out.
