Encinitas, California / Garden design study

A little room to wander.

A relaxed coastal garden where grasses catch the light and a winding path slows the pace.

A winding gravel path through golden grasses and violet flowers
The space

A family back garden

The approach

Naturalistic planting

The planting

Late-summer color and texture

The starting point

A space with
possibility.

This family garden needed to make room for everyday meals and the quieter moments between them. A large open lawn felt exposed, and the existing edges had little interest through the year.

The design direction

Instead of filling every edge with a dense hedge, the design uses airy planting to create softer layers. A path curves toward an outdoor table, with fine grasses close enough to brush past. The plant palette repeats across the garden to make the whole space feel connected.

This study explores how a modest change in route and planting can make a garden feel more generous, without making it busier.

The details

Small choices.
A complete picture.

  • A permeable decomposed-granite path
  • Seasonal movement from grasses and flowering perennials
  • A shaded spot for a long outdoor lunch
  • Planting layers that soften views without closing them off
